If you’re the type who grew up humming “Once Upon a December” or still gets emotional over the animated film (don’t worry, same), then here’s something to get genuinely excited about: Anastasia the Musical is coming to Melbourne in December 2025.
It’ll make its Australian debut at the Regent Theatre, and honestly, I can’t think of a more perfect setting for a show like this — grand, opulent, and right in the heart of the city.
What is Anastaisa The Musical about?
Anastasia The Musical follows Anya, a young woman on a journey to uncover her past and figure out if she’s really the lost Russian princess, Anastasia Romanov. It blends historical fiction, royal mystery, romance, and a dash of fantasy — and somehow makes it all work.
If you’ve seen the animated film, you’ll recognise some of the original songs like “Journey to the Past” and “Once Upon a December”, but there’s also a whole set of new music written specifically for the Broadway production. Think of it as a richer, deeper version of the story — more grown-up, but still totally magical.
Who’s Anastaisa The Musical bringing to Melbourne?
Anastasia The Musical is being put together by Opera Australia and John Frost, who’ve been behind massive musical hits like Phantom, The Book of Mormon, and Wicked. They’ve been trying to bring Anastasia here since it first opened on Broadway in 2017 — so you know they’re not going to half-do it.
Simon Militano from Opera Australia said they expect it to “captivate audiences around the country.” Honestly, same.

Tickets aren’t on sale just yet, but there’s an official waitlist on anastasiathemusical.com.au — and I’d suggest jumping on it if you don’t want to miss out. This one’s going to sell fast.
I’ve always had a soft spot for musicals that balance spectacle and story, and Anastasia nails that. It’s not just a Disney-style singalong (though there’ll definitely be a few of those moments), it’s a big, beautiful production with emotion and heart behind it.
Plus, seeing it on stage is a totally different experience to watching it on screen. The sets, the live orchestra, the costumes — all of it adds a richness that makes you feel part of it.
Whether you’re a musical theatre regular or just looking for something new to do in the city this summer, Anastasia at the Regent Theatre is worth putting on your radar. Grab a few friends, book dinner nearby, and make a night of it.
And yes — you will leave singing “Journey to the Past” in your head. That’s half the fun.
